Marshall Kirkpatrick of Read/WriteWeb uses Netvibes as startpage. And you ?

In his recent post about Five Tools Everyone Working Online Should Have (IMHO), Marshall Kirkpatrick , influential Lead Author at Read/WriteWeb writes:

"Startpage

Every place I work I set up an RSS startpage for myself and my co-workers. Consulting clients, non-profits, anybody I can get my hands on gets a startpage before I'm done with them. I usually use Netvibes just because it's easy to share pages, the OPML handling is pretty good and the mobile version is great. The new Ginger version breaks sharing for some people, though.

I put the highest priority RSS feeds that I subscribe to on that startpage, then put a link to it on my browser toolbar. I click on that maybe once an hour and see if these top sources have anything new. It's quick and easy, much easier than opening up a whole feed reader."

You can see in the image a capture of his Netvibes page.

And you, what are you using and why ?

Have you seen the BBC website à la Netvibes ?

BBC à la Netvibes

The old and serious British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has just revamped its web site.

And it is a success! You have a Webpage similar at our Netvibes page. Of course the news feeds are just coming from the BBC but you can move, edit, delete, replace and add them as you could do in Netvibes, the home page specialist.

You can also choose between more than 10 colours for the background.

I am sure it is just the beginning of a slow revolution.

Only problem is that you can save your settings but just on the computer you are using and it will not survive if you cancell your cookies...

The BBC has launched a Netvibes style homepage

Hi,

the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has just launched a new homepage very much in the style of Netvibes, reports the Read/WriteWeb blog.

At the moment, you can only choose in the BBC content of news and services but who knows in the future ?

"Please set your location to receive local news, weather and TV/radio schedules"...
a text I would be pleased to see in the new users page of Netvibes.

When I was saying that content is the center of the war...

Time names Netvibes in the 50 Best Websites 2007

Hi,

as reported by Netvibes, Time has named Netvibes one of 50 Best Websites 2007 as a winner in the Web Service category.

Time decided "to honor sites with exceptional style and smarts, sites that offer new and improved ways to access and share content, generate our own and otherwise enrich the online (and off-line) experience".

Time gives a complete description of theservices provided Netvibes.com : Create a Custom Homepage and invites readers to vote so go here and vote (if you like).

I voted myself and my note was in the 90, higher than the 65 I credited Netvibes in a previous discussion because I wanted to point out the overall quality of the service that Netvibes provides compared also to other web service categories.

At the moment Netvibes ranks 7° with more than 700 votes with an average of 75 .

The only Netvibes competitor mentioned by TIME is: Honorable mention: Pageflakes.

Netvibes is Charging the new NETVIBES UNIVERSES

Hi,

Since April 17, 2007 at 01:29 AM, Netvibes is charging their new: NETVIBES UNIVERSES and thet is what I see on my Netvibes page:
"We are currently upgrading our server infrastructure to serve you better, please come back later.
Check the blog for more details"

In their Blog, Tariq Krim, the CEO, is announcing many new improvements even after the Coriander version: the NETVIBES UNIVERSE concept.

"Soon, every single Netvibes user will be able to create a personal Netvibes Universe, that is, a Netvibes page that you can build using the content and widgets that you want -- and make it available to the world at large."

That will give you:

1) The possibility to Share a Netvibes page with others (as I was asking in my 10 things I want from my home page)
Netvibes users will soon have two pages for every account: a private page, where you subscribe to all the content for your personal, everyday use, and a public page, where you can allow others to access your favorite content -- everything that you love on the web.

2) Access a selection new Branded Universes
More than a hundred special Netvibes Universe pages will be available trough partnership with leading content publishers to create official Universes for some of your favorite musicians and media outlets.
Other Universes are on the way, and Netvibes asks for your advice.

Well let's wait and see...

Home pages comparison_Part 1

Hi,

I am trying to start an Home Pages comparison.

In the mean time check this one on WebWorkerDaily. It refers to Ajax Start Pages:

1) Google’s Personalized Home Page

2) Netvibes

3) Pageflakes

4) Protopage

5) Yourminis

For each there are pro e con but the general conclusion is not yet a positive one :

"That "All those home pages" have a ways to go before they provide the informational richness and immediate action that this web worker needs. "
