No good Wimbledon 2008 widget available ? I have for you a feed, a radio and video on demand

As Netvibes has not (yet?) any Wimbledon 2008 Tennis Championships widget to offer, I have decided to check the Web for you, and me ;)

You can listen to Wimbledon Live Radio

and if you really want more, there is also the Video On Demand :

And WEB 2.0 is not forgotten: you have a small window on the right column: My Wimbledon ;) : you can choose your top 5 preferred players and follow their results and news.

If you know other interesting sources, let me know.

iGoogle the home page from Google and Netvibes' biggest competitor announcing big changes

iGoogle, the personalized home page from Google and the biggest competitor for Netvibes is announcing some changes to come:

1) Google will allow Widget (gadgets) Developers to insert Ads in their Widgets:
"... but there will be some restrictions. Ads will be limited to the canvas view only and certain types of ads will not be allowed. Developers are free to use any ad provider to place ads in their gadget. However, we strive to maintain the best user experience, and as such, we plan on surveying users to determine how ads impact user satisfaction. Poor user ratings and reviews may impact a gadget's viral features, ranking, and directory listing.

Ads cannot move across the page or expand beyond their initial bounds - they must hold a persistent location. No pop-up windows are allowed. Audio ads cannot be initiated without user action."

2) IGoogle will become social and create Friends
Users will have full control over who their friends are and will be able to easily modify their list of friends. Expected to roll out this summer.

3) other improvements include: Notifiactions/Messages, Widget invitations and permissions...

Strangely enough, iGoogle has not its own url meaning by that that it is just a part of the Google main Search web site ?

Some "fresh" data from iGoogle:

iGoogle Users:

  • Tens of millions (??!!) worldwide, 50% US and 50% outside
  • One of Google's fastest growing products the past two years
  • 42 languages, 73 domains

Top Gadgets:
  • Weather
  • Date & Time
  • CNN.com
  • Movies

Interesting comment by Steve Rubel, here.

SCOOP: Netvibes widget will record your videos within your Netvibes page and then post them to Seesmic

SCOOP: A new Netvibes widget will allow you to recording your videos/webcams within your Netvibes page and then post them to the Seesmic video platform.

This widget is coming from the San Francisco office of Netvibes.

Some recent test videos are here:

and here:

Seesmic, a video chat service, was founded in September 2007 by serial entrepreneur, Loic Le Meur. In addition to his successful track record with start-ups, Loic is also one of Europe’s best-known bloggers and founder of LeWeb3, the largest European conference focused on rising stars and established players on the Web (over 2000 participants from 40 Countries at the last edition). Loic also served as Internet advisor to French President Sarkozy and serves as an advisor to the World Economic Forum in Davos.

I want a Summize Widget not on Twitter but on all Netvibes users updates !

I really like the Netvibes' Summize Widget that I presented yesterday.

I have 4 copies of it: 1) with search "netvibes" , 2) with "netviber" , 3) with my city and 4) with the search of the day : "hot" (check the capture)

It is creazy how many people are Twittering near you (your city) or are using the same expression (hot)!!

I have "followed" a few of them and, who knows, they could become "friends"...

Now, imagine the same service offered by Netvibes with a search on all our Netvibes users public updates : that would be also an easy and yet massive source of information !

And it would be also another "competitive advantage" for Netvibes ;)

PS: one of the most searched string is possibly "iphone", strange no ?

I want an option to read all my RSS feeds with an images in my Netvibes page

I want an option to read all my RSS feeds with an images on the side if existing.

Look this capture of the Netvibes Universe of Laurent Binard (Founder of Wikio):

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

all the feeds are published in details with an image on the side. And I want the same !
Is this made by Wikio ? I do not care I want it for all my graphic sites, Design, Fashion, Photos, DVD, Music ... You name it, I want it.

Please Mr Developers do something ! ;)

NetEx Tip: get the MY WALL widget to let others write you on your Netvibes Universe

With the new Widget called MY WALL you can let others (friends or at least Netvibes users) to write a Message (1000 signs) on your Message Board.

It was conceived for your Netvibes Universe (public) page but you can send a copy to your private page and check from there your Wall. You can also write yourself from there.

Some friends , (as Fiuz ;) ) have copied My own Wall to their Netvibes page and by doing so are able to write from there on My Wall ;)

A nice and long waited (since Ginger testing) widget.

You can of course edit: title, number of messages, dedicated image, short comment.

What is missing ? Perhaps the possibility to include a little image ...

NetEx Rating : 4****/5 so I publish it here on my my Really ESSENTIAL WIDGETS tab in my Universe where you can get it by "SEND TO MY PRIVATE PAGE" option or
by clicking here:

New Parser Widget perfect for my Airport Flight information tab on my Netvibes Universe

I was expecting this widget since the beginning of my Netvibes page.

I wanted to grab a just a piece of a website page. In fact I was looking for the Arrivals or Departures from a chosen airport. But I just needed the landings not the ads ;) or the multiple options for travel fares, car rentals, ...

I could not use the Page Web widget from Netvibes because the data I was looking for were not in the upper left corner ... and this widget has no "padding" option. (And when I requsted if it could be added, Netvibes answered me that they had more urgent matters)

So , I could just get my links and check manually outside Netvibes :(

But this new Widget: AUTOMATIC PARSER from Twisterss is simply what I needed !

So easy to use, and I have tried many "self-called" magic widgets!

For me it is a 5*****/5 Widget : a must have if you need frequent updated data not available sous RSS feed.: graphs, timetables,...

UPDATE: here is an other very positive review from Widgetlab.com:

If this reads as something familiar or known is because it is..this is the way Clipmarks or Listas from Live Labs work.

The only difference is that they do not have the High Spread Distribution model offered by the UWA platform from netvibes and that is reason enough for this to triumph over them and also because neither Clipmarks or Listas Offer any comparable Widget to users from the data collected in their respective services.

This Widget generator service is just the kind of thing that could finally lure some users from their competition and it is now just a matter of seeing how the new Netvibes Engine (ginger) works for them.

Here is the description on the Netvibes Developers Blog who has introduced it to me ;)

"Built by Netvibes user Tristan “Twisterss” Groléat, it features a state-of-the-art HTML parser that allows users to pull just about anything out of any web-page, as long as it can be found using the DOM.

The instructions are sparse, and the usage is quick to grok:

  1. Enter the URL of the webpage
  2. Select the information you are interested in on the preview of the page: one block or many blocks of the same type
  3. Check that the widget really selects what you want
  4. Confirm your selection
  5. The widget displays the information you want, and refreshs it automatically every 20 minutes."
The only modifications I can ask at the moment are:
  1. the option for a SCROLLING up & down for a web page to long like my London Heatrow
  2. the option for a SIZE (W x L) for the final widget

Of course, it depends on the original page to work. So I have arranged an INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT FLIGHT INFORMATION Tab on my Universe:

At the moment I have: New York JFK Airport Arrivals, Brussels National Airport Arrivals and London Heatrow Arrivals. I am not able to get the French Paris CDG .
If NY and Brussels are Ok, the London Heatrow is too big and not well centered but is working.

New Print option in the WebNote of Netvibes' Ginger release

With the new Ginger, there are small changes coming one by one ...

The last I spotted is the option "PRINT THIS MODULE" in the WEB NOTE WIDGET.
This module allows you to take your own notes directly in your Netvibes.

You get it from: ADD CONTENT/ESSENTIAL WIDGETS/Webnote.

The print starts alone but be carefull as if when you edited your Webnote module you had chosen size:small it will be printed really, really small (must be size 3-4).
Even the Big Size is just a 7-8 !

I was waiting this fonction since the begging and I would like to have it to print my all Netvibes page, or at least a Tab at the time...

UPDATE Sat 23 :( = The option has desappeared ... hope it comes back soon !
UPDTAE Mon25 :): Option is back ! LET'S KEP IT !!

How to place a Widgtet in the Popular Search of Netvibes' Ecosystem

Hi,

The Netvibes' Developers Blog has published their "guidelines" to conceive a popular widget and this post completes a comment I made there.

A new widget to ensure maximum popularity, should fits more that one quality; one is good, two is great, three takes the cake. Four is unheard of yet, and five wins you something:

  1. Useful / Needed

  2. Pretty / Cool / Personalizable

  3. Timely

  4. Viral

  5. Local

Then they give also this advice about the positioning of Widgets in the Netvibes Ecosystem :

".. each widget category is sorted by popularity by default, with two others sorts being available (most recent, and Premium Widget, which is a special type of widget, created by Netvibes). So, since you cannot rely too much on the novelty of your widget - or the lack thereof, since new ones come every day -, your aim as a developer is to keep your widget as high as possible in the popularity scale."

But How to bring a Widget to the Top of the popularity scale ?

Look at this widget (not mine ;) ): ALL MY GOOGLE SERVICES
it is very good. Perhaps the best in his category as I posted yesterday.

Now, it is competing with “old” widgets. If I search Google in the Ecosystem (http://eco.netvibes.com/search?q=google) the Top 3 have more than 20.000 downloads… The AllMyGoogle with 435 will never be able to recover to see the sky ...

The MOST POPULAR SEARCH should work for comparable time laps...

Then, POPULAR is not well mesured by DOWNLOADED or INSTALLS.
I myself downloaded a lot and deleted also a lot since then.

Good Mesure would be: IN USE or even USED in the last … days.
Even BEST RATED could be more helpfull then just downloaded.

In the end, The ECOSYSTEM Search, as it is now, is just reinforcing old Widgets giving no visibility to new widgets.

That way it prevents Netvibes users to access to them and in consequence that could lead for them to a “less good” experience…

On the other hand, as written by GigaOm, that would give space for an AdSense model that allows widget makers to pay to place their widget more prominently on the Netvibes site.

So, Widget Producers will have to pay for better placement (good for revenues) but the Search result will not be better for Netvibes’ users (bad for users) !

It is the Altavista/Yahoo search model (pay just for presence) against the Google one (pay to be near pertinence).

We know the winner...

"All My Google Services" : the best widget so far 3***

Hi,

visiting the Universe of Philippe, I checked his "WIDGETS I MADE Tab" and I found a few widgets but one is really impressive: ALL MY GOOGLE SERVICES.

In one widget, you can Check and Use your Calendar, GMAIL, Search, Gtalk, Maps, Notebook, Documents, Google Reader, You Tube, News and Picasa, all Google Services.

If you do not need or use one, you can unsuscribe to it. It is small and efficient.

I can read and send emails. Perfect if you need to write an email or take a note, inside your Netvibes. (I do)

No login is required if you have done it before.
(So the problem is that I will not show it in my Really Essential Widgets Tab of my Public Universe as it will show all ;))

Thanks Philippe! That is a useful Widget. I will check your others widgets too.

Rating: 3***/3

New "Best Universe by NetEx" : my selection of Netvibes Public Universes

Hi,

After the success of the last BEST UNIVERSES 2007 Awards I decided to share with everyone my preferred Public NetvibesUniverses so here my New tab: "Best Universes by NetEx".

It is just a personnal choice to show other users work, taste, efforts and findings.

I am still looking for good and rich content (not just copy/paste or just feeds) coupled with nice, original design. Everybody is still "under construction" and I am sure we will have interesting discoveries.

I have a Message Board for you to drop me an Universe (yours or one you liked) I will check it... But wait untill you have something solid to show.

At the moment I have 16 Universes selected. I use the Add Content/Essential Widget/ link widget from netvibes that shows a litte thumnail of the site but I think it slows down the page so I might change. Any way, by clicking on the mini widget you will go to the selected Universe.

Thanks Netvibes !

Enjoy!

A better way to leave a short message on my Universe: wEb mEssAges widget

Hi,

this post is the follow-up of a previous one on the best way to let others leave me a short note on my Public Universe.

My favorite is a Widget called : wEb mEssAgEs and is hosted by WidgetBox.com.

Here is their own description: Web messages to leave on a web site. You can use it as a message board, a mini forum, a sign or guestbook, as a chat, a shoutbox, a tagboard, a mini forum,... It supports typical smilies. You can configure color, timezone and other basic parameters. Note: Only the last 50 messages are shown.

I would add, that links that are in the text open in a separate windows and I like that. You can send it to your own Universe and even your own Private page.

As with all this kind of applications with netvibes, you will be able to read and write on my Widget from any netvibes page you want. But if you need a "different and separate" widget from mine, get one for yourself by just signin in: its free.

No problem to configure colours, size, title but to install it, I had problems to send it to My universe (why ??). So I send it easily on my Netvibes private page (with the special button reserved to Netvibes) and then I went back on my Widgetbox page to get the HTML code that I copied in the Add Content/Essential Widgets/ Html widget from Netvibes.

My message Board it is working fine and you can use it here on MY BEST UNIVERSES selection ...

Leave a short Note on My Netvibes Universe and get the Widget for yours

Hi,

A few days ago I was looking for a simple way for my Friends to leave me a short note on my Netvibes Universe.

Thanks to Chris, I have the solution. It is not a Pure Netvibes Solution as we use a Pageflakes widget (they Call it Message Board Flake). Hey that is WEB3.0 !!

But the result is OK.

Try it, leave me the Url of your Universe so I can check it and get the Widget for your Netgvibes page and/or Universe with the SEND THIS MODULE option.

My Message Board is here. Hey, it works, already 2 messages ! Thanks!

Netvibes presents the Facebook Widget

Hi,

Netvibes has just announced the Facebook Widget.

Now the Netvibers will be able to check their Facebook accounts on the Netvibes page.

On the Content side, Netvibes is using Facebook (as any other external source) to try to increase its own audience: that's fair enough but Facebook does not accept the situation.

In fact, Facebook does not currently allow outsider providers to access their News Feed.

In other words, Facebook won't let you display your News Feed from the front page in your widget (or change your status for that matter.) . Facebook is then retaing its own content to be viewed on its own website.

That way, Facebook increases the traffic on its own site. Facebook future tactic could be to create a Netvibes style platform and offer it to its own audience to keep them there.

The WEB PORTALS 2.0 are coming ...

More infos:

- for Competition from Homepages with Facebook: "To compete with Facebook as a social network, they need to attract third party developers - and quickly."

- for Competition between Facebook and Myspace: "Facebook’s strategy is almost the polar opposite from MySpace. While MySpace frets over third party widgets, alternatively shutting them down or acquiring them, Facebook is now opening up its core functions to all outside developers."

Netvibes should replace Modules with Widgets

Hi,

I was checking the Netvibes Ecosystem for new Modules to add to my own Netviebs page and I was a bit confused in seeing that there was no more a tab for Modules and that it was replaced by Widgets!

But, If you click on the Widgets tab, that is the text "Modules are applications and services built by the community of Netvibes developers."

So if for Netvibes, Modules are the Widgets, I would expect from netvibes a massive copy/paste and the replacement of the of the old term.

I prefer myself, Widget, as is worldwide accepted and should increase the diffusion of Netvibes.

About Widgets Monetization and Netvibes_part 2

Hi,

yesterday I started a discussion on the possible revenues for netvibes coming from Widgets Monetization.

Let's first explain what are Widgets and why they interest the Marketing community:

Basically, Widgets are portable applications (programs) that provide functionality and content online. Widgets can either sit on a user’s desktop or a web page and perform a function. There are desktop (Yahoo and Vista) and webtop widgets (webblog, Netvibes, Pageflakes, Myspace, iGoogle, etc.) made available via Springwidgets.com, Clearspring.com , Netvibes, Widgetbox.com, or other platforms, with many different functions that they can perform.

If you use Netvibes, by clicking on the upper left side of your page on the "ADD CONTENT" you will have a choice between Widgets and Universes.

Netvibes' Widgets are devided in Feeds (RSS) ; Basic Widgets (Weather, WebNote,...); Communication (Gmail, Yahoomail, Popmail...) ; Search (Web, Blog, Images, ...); Applications (digg, ebay, twitter,...); External widgets (UWA modules, Web page by url...) .
The interesting thing about Widgets is that you can add them where you want (if they are correctly written) and you become independent from the Original Web page. In Netvibes (or any other independent personalized homepage) you can have your Gmail next to your YahooMail and your Msn Hotmail. You can read the feeds from the BBC next to the CNN and the REUTERS (but all of you know that already).
The difficulty for the Content Providers and the Advertising industry is that the Widgets use programming languages that create problems in measuring the audience of the "Original Content Provider" as the final user (Me) is not always directly connected to the Content Provider (ex: CNN).
On the other way, the Widget builders will want to:

1) Drive Traffic to their own site (ex: Tip of the Day, Photo of the Day, latest Blog post, or a Sale of the Day )

2) Allow for a deeper connection with their consumers (ex: a nationally known pet products brand offered a desktop widget that allows users to get updated local weather and have a photo of their pet as a background)

3) Push the Brand

4) Build links (from every site that embeds the widget)

Widgets represent an entirely new way of looking at advertising.

Unlike almost all other online ads, widgets are uploaded onto sites (personal sites, profile pages, blogs) by consumers themselves. They are pulled by their audience, instead of pushed by marketers. And the publishers (largely personal publishers) who upload them are far more than affiliates: owing to these publishers’ personal dynamic and voice, they become advocates for the marketers whose widgets they help distribute.

About Widgets viewership:

In the Wall Street Journal, Comscore reports on viewership of widgets: 177.8 million in April:
Slide is leading the widget economy with 117.1 mln widget-views in April 2007, followed by RockYou with 82 mln., followed by PictureTrail, PhotoBucket, Bunnyhero Labs, BlingyBob, POQbum, Brightcove, Layoutstar and MusicPlaylist.us. 105 mln people visited MySpace in April 2007 and 38.8 mln visited Facebook.
Many readers have noted that YouTube.com is not included...

Revenues of Netvibes could come from Widget Monetization

Hi,

in the same interview discussed here, Tariq Krim, Ceo and founder of Netvibes, says more aboutpossible future revenues.

On Revenues, Tariq Krim is explicit when he says that RSS will only give marginal revenues and that he believes more on Widgets monetization. "We work at the moment with numerous partners on monetization and branding of the Widgets".

"Widgets monetization is exploding".

"CBS has chosen Netvibes to widgetize the broadcasting of their videos on the web. The movies Rush Hours 3 with Jacky Chan or Hairspray with John Travolta use our Universes to promote the launch of their movies in the USA."

As Tariq Krim is not clear on the ways to do that Widget Monetization, here are some good ways to it:
1) Ads in the widget.
2) Ads within the content in the widget. Individual posts can contain advertising.
3) Ads between the posts within the widget. It is possible to have ads in between certain posts (e.g. between the second and third articles.)
4) Pre-roll/post-roll in a video in the widget.

(from http://walkerfenton.blogspot.com/search/label/widget%20monetization)

So far, the discussion around monetization has centered on how publishers can monetize the widgets that people embed on other sites.
Perhaps this is the wrong question – or an incomplete question. Maybe the discussion should be around how the widget itself can be a monetization platform for the host site.

Krim (Netvibes CEO): Widgets will generate revenues

Hi,

here my transcript of an interesting video in French of the closing keynote speech on the subject of Advertising and Web 2.0 by Tariq Krim, founder and CEO of Netvibes.

The event was the AD:TECH PARIS 6th - 7th March 2007, Palais des Congrès, Paris and Netvibes did not yet published the Coriander Version with more custimization possibilities and the Universes were not available.

The Video is interesting in that you can feel the hesitation and the doubts of Tariq Krim about the revenue side of Netvibes compared with the easy speech he can show when he speaks about services and usability of Netvibes. He says many times that Netvibes is what he needs himself.

You really can feel that the business model is very very vague and that must have been the cause of the departure of WEB 1.0 entrepreneur Pierre Chappaz from Netvibes.

CLOSING KEYNOTE: Advertsing in 2.0 era

[the following are theText of the slides presented by Tariq Krim]

Time is a strategic choice

Attention is a personal choice

-

Our digital life is growing... out of control

-

Netvibes is about where you focus

your interests

your attention

-

Netvibes is about you -

No advertising.

No logos.

No corporate control on the page - 100% user control and creation -

Community (Netvibes Ecosystem) provide the content

More than 12.000 Feeds, Modules, Podcasts, Calendars and Shared tabs made by users

More than 1 million unique RSS feeds managed by Netvibes

-

And your Brand ?

-

In all this, RSS is a smart distribution channel but it is still ... boring!

-

Netvibes makes RSS sexier for: photos, videos, music, flash

-

Working on an unfinished business

(web 1.0) -free the data

(Web 2.0) -free the Application

(Netvibes ) -free the User

-

How it will happen: -

the end of the web page -

the end of the browser (as we know it) -

the deportalisation: break the web in small independent pieces of living information: WIDGETS

-

Introducing Universal Widget API: build your netvibes widget and make (it) available on every widget platform, blog,... Write once, run everywhere! Netvibes, Dashboard, Google,...

-

Universal Widget API (UWA) - Opensource Javascript runtime - Netvibes UI library for your own widgets - building with our community a wall of APIs

-

Coming today on our developers network

http://developers.netvibes.com/

[After the slides, there was some kind of questions and answers. Here is my summary]

Q: How brands (not from the Web world) can integrate the Web ?

A: with the widget. Brands will create and offer their own widget. ex: CocaCola could offer a Music Channel widget ...

The concept is to give to every individual users an individual information but you need to be trusted (best is the friends community)

Widget is stronger than Ad because you choose it, you installed it, you like it and you trusted who sent it you!

Q: What are the New trends in Advertising with WEB 2.0 ?

A : The future will see less interest in just the Audience rate but more interest in the Attention rate of the user! Because of the stronger relation with the users that chooses his own piece of information where and when he wants it.

Q ( from CEO yahoo france): what is Netvibes' business model ?

A: the Widgets will generate revenues: by affiliation.

Let's say Ebay does not need new users (because it has already a very big audience) but Ebay needs to create a stronger relation with each user (that will translate in longer time with the service and then bigger revenues) . Ebay is less interested in Audience rate than in the Attention rate of its users.

Q: What are your revenues now (March 2007)

A: At the moment Netvibes has not significative revenues as we concentrate on increasing our user base (almost 10 millions) . You can not create revenues and, at the same time, increase your audience. We choose audience. We want a better product (ex coriander) , a new mobile version, better usability , new services, a Chinese version;

With an Higher Quality World Audience, we could think of pre-roll widgets, as with the ads before the videos. Widgets could be sponsorised. RSS has potential

Q: DO you have technological patents ?

A: Netvibes has just started first and is a good service.

Netvibes creates an ATTENTION NETWORK: created by the user.

Q: who is afraid of Netvibes?

A: Nobody. There is space for everybody...

Q: Who will buy you?

A: ... (with a large smile) . Many WEB 2.0 actors just thought about being bought by the Big Fishes and forgot to ask for enough starting money... We obtained ... 12 millions Euros...
