No good Wimbledon 2008 widget available ? I have for you a feed, a radio and video on demand

As Netvibes has not (yet?) any Wimbledon 2008 Tennis Championships widget to offer, I have decided to check the Web for you, and me ;)

Follow the Euro 2008 with Netvibes (4*/5) and other Footbal widgets

Now that Euro 2008 has started you will realize that you need to know that match result or to check the standings or want to read the last updated news or to follow the live result of a match playing.

For that Netvibes has prepeared a nice and cool Euro 2008 public Universe Tab : one in English and one in Français.
The tab in the Universe in English presents only US widgets for a sport called "Soccer" :)

If the Content presentation made by Netvibes was poor and boring to use, there was a solution.

So that is what I have done for you: I checked all the widgets proposed in the netvibes Blog post, added them on my Netvibes page one by one . This way the end user, you, are saved the boring part of the process and by just clicking here:

you will access one of my Universes with the specific Tab.

So Netvibes Blog post should not be abolished , as they work better with Google :) , but the Netvibes Universe Way should used every time to save time to the end user.

First Content presentation from Netvibes: very poor and boring

After monthes of my points about Netvibes lacking of human content propositions, Netvibes is trying to build some Content Offer.

Yesterday, a first post in the Netvibes blog, titled : This way Girl, was presenting a simple selection of 9 different sources about what the poster, Diane, called , feminine websites.

Other Content will be Sport, Video Games ...

The reactions to the "unserious tone" of the Post was not well received by some of the Netvibes aficionadas accusing the post to be sexist. I will not participate to this debate ...

But, I have to say that this is content presentation it is a very poor presentation: a Blog presentation.

Just a list with links to the old Netvibes ecosystem.

If you like the widget you have to click on add to Netvibes. This means that you loose the Blog page you were in :( and that you open a second page of your Netvibes. To add the second widget, you have to come back to the Blog page and do it again the same process: Boring !

The best part was the Cartoon style image. Who is the author ?

I want a Netvibes Directory of Content

The most frustrating thing when you have a powerful tool is not to have enough material to use it.

Imagine your super new full HD Tv 16/9 screen just showing only '60 B/W 4/3 sitcoms or your super flat super light Mac Air just for typing your expenses notes: A Nightmare !

Now, you have this Netvibes Ginger, ZE Social Homepage, with powerful tools: ALL FEEDS, REMIXED FEED READER, STAR IT ! , MY WALL, MY UNIVERSE, MY COMMUNITY and using it just for reading your Friends Twitters, the BBC World news, TechCrunch feeds and a few friends' blog : what a waste !

Where is the discovery ? Where is the all Web ? Where is the All Netvibes Community ? What I am missing ? What is the new content that you were looking for but without knowing it ?

Well, all of that could/should be in a Netvibes DIRECTORY of CONTENT.

The 2 Mln different RSS feeds that Netvibes users have found should be "offered" to other users in many forms:

• most read
• by language
• by country
• by subject

It is not easy to do it and at first a "handmade" version would probably be necessary. But a lot Netviber users, I am sure, would be interested to be part of this action ;)

We could start with a DMOZ structure, the one at the source of the first Google Page Ranking, that Netvibes users, in a Wiki style, could use to rate Feeds and Universe

Mean while you can check sites like: AllTop and a copy/clone for SouthAmerica Notilat and imagine the same page but with a little green sign with a white cross at the side of each feed source meaning : add it to my Netvibes page.

Themed Public Netvibes Universes: the new way to choose Content

Hi,

waiting for the General relase of Ginger to all Netviber users and also thinking at the millions of potential "future non-geek user users" for Netvibes I would like to propose a new way to offer Content on Netvibes: Themed Public Universes.

The Search method works only if you know what you want, but we do not always know what we would like. That is why, other people experience is valuable (so, we read others' feed, twitters, friends status,... ) but that way is not an organized way.

But Netvibes' Ginger with the Public Universe is the solution with the "Send to your Private Page/Public Universe" option !

We need a series of Themed Universes : NEWS , FINANCE, FOOD, TRAVEL, SPORT, GAMES, ... by LANGUAGE and by COUNTRY ?
Those Dedicated Universes would be made of "selected" and relieable widgets and news.

The users could visit those Themed Universes and with just one click send all the news, widgets, pics, maps, notes, comments, ideas he has just discovered on its own Netvibes Page.

From the TRAVEL Universe, let's say, I would see and read the best travel widgets aggregated by TABs: Airlines, Tourist Guides, Destinations, Last minutes, ...
Or Imagine the Touristic Brazil Universe: Beaches, Food, Football, Carnival, Music, Unknown Brazil, ...

In an humble way, is what I try to achieve with my Netviber Experience Universe all dedicated to the Netvibes World... ;) but others are going the same way...

Look here, is WZD.com a Netvibes clone that I discovered some time ago, that is proposing 2 Themed Universes: a "Finance Universe" and an "Enterprise Universe": dozens of Tabs with dozens of Widgets selected by subject. BUT NO, I DO NOT READ KOREAN ;)

Netvibes will follow Myspace and Facebook for Content ?

just read on TechCrunch this post from Michael Arrington concerning the quest of Content from the 2 leaders of WEB2.0 Social Networking Sites:

"MySpace continues to roll out local versions of its social network. ...they tend to put a team on the ground locally (they are now hiring in Turkey) and then build the site not only in the local language, but promote local artists and other popular culture as well. MySpace now has offices in London, Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Milan, Stockholm, Helsinki, Oslo, Copenhagen, Sydney, Mexico City, Sao Palo, Buenos Aires, Toronto, Tokyo, and Beijing. Offices will be opening up soon in Mumbai, Moscow, and Istanbul.

Facebook is taking a radically different approach - tapping users to do all the hard work for them. They are picking and choosing markets (Spanish was opened first, two weeks ago; today German and French were launched) and asking just a few users to test out their collaborative translation tool. Once the tool is perfected and enough content has been translated, Facebook will offer users the ability to quickly switch the language on the site, per their preference.

As, I already written more than once, Netvibes will also have to go, fast, for more Content, not only local...

First Interesting Netvibes Universe: I love Politics ! (Netviber Experience rating of 10/10)

I have jus found this Universe, ILovePolitics, finally a Netvibes Universe with real content and real work done to prepare it.

Created by French Marjorie Paillon, is the most complete site about the US Presidency election.

With 21 Tabs and hundreds of feeds, news, videos, humor,data, maps, dates, polls,... from the USA, UK and France, ILovePolitics Universe is the place to go to follow this great event.

That is what I mean when I was writing about content and "Human content aggregation" !

It is with this kind of content, that Netvibes could really become popular. Yes, the vast majority of my friends and all my family do not understand what is an RSS and when they do they are not able to find and get some. But they can read it, if its ready made !

And here Netvibes is the best: you just keep the feeds you like !! You place them as you want ! and slowly you get ideas and you can start searching for something...

That could be "part of the viral" approach that Netvibes needs to explode.

Only small critic: the Headline picture for the Universe i quite big when I watch it from my LapTop...

In conclusion: Netviber Experience Rating: 10/10

Results of the 1st POLL on Netvibes

Some weeks ago I launched the first Poll on Netvibes here on Netviber Experience:

Simple question:

NETVIBES IS GOOD FOR ?

1. Reading Feeds : 92%
2. Checking Websites : 52%
3. Keeping Bookmarks : 42%
4. Syncronizing different Computers : 39%
5. Searching the Web : 31%

So with no surprise the First actual use for Netvibes is as a Feed Reader.

Probably the Ginger socializing Update if coupled with better content should switch the uses of Netvibes towards "communication" and "information" in a larger sense.

It could be interesting to read the Polls that Netvibes has SURELY already produced on their service especially now that more than 2000 users waiting for an upgrade.

Netvibes is finally looking for more local content

Hi,

I already wrote a few posts on the need for Netvibes to get more Content, and especially Local Content, the one related to the place you live and work.

And it seems that Netvibes has just decided to go alos that direction.

In a recent post in the Netvibes Developers' Blog, they wrote:

"... that local content is as important to us as is global content - and it’s even the primary reason behind UWA and Ecosystem: to let developers build widget for local services, to let users submit local feeds and data, and have all these local items be available to all Netvibes users."

"So build local widgets and submit them to Ecosystem: local items are just as important as global ones, and everyone wants local informations coming directly to their desktop! That’s what UWA is for, and we hope to some cool widgets land on future updates of Netvibes’ local start-pages. Let’s build the long tail of widgets!"

The big problem is the search of the Ecosystem Directory that is not as efficient as a similar search with Google.

If I want to find my own tab: LONDON (UK) in the Netvibes Ecosystem

1) I can search the Ecosystem with its own search : http://eco.netvibes.com/search?q=LONDON+UK , and I will found it in the second page because of the small number of downloads (but in results with a better download rate there is BEEF BAGEL ??!!). If I prefer I can choose the "most recent" but then again as it is not a new widget, mine will not show up. So, it will be difficult for a new widget to show up in the first page if only downloads is requested.

2) I can search the Ecosystem with a selective search by GOOGLE:

and bang! It is the first result! Impressive.

That is for searching a specific item but the problem remains with a generic search.

If I wanted to earn revenues with Netvibes...

Hi,

I was thinking about which ways I could use if I wanted to get revenues with Netvibes.

Here is a first list:

1. creating an "exclusive content Univers" using Netvibes as a "media platform" to aggregate content with several different widgets and selling the audience to Advertisers. These Content Universes (say the "New York Restaurants Univers by Peter: lists, reviews, suggestions ") should have some kind of exclusivity and promotion from Netvibes or they could just be "rented" to Netvibes .
   
2. creating "single widgets" to be placed on Netvibes and other platforms and selling that audience to Advertisers
3. getting an exclusive deal with Netvibes as their only Advertising Sales agency selling cumulative or targetted audiences to Advetisers

For all of those, I would need some agreement from Netvibes and more data on the actual users.

And you will correctly guess which is my preferred solution at the moment...

If there are many others with ideas like this, netvibes could have found its business model.

The BBC has launched a Netvibes style homepage

the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has just launched a new homepage very much in the style of Netvibes, reports the Read/WriteWeb blog.

At the moment, you can only choose in the BBC content of news and services but who knows in the future ?

"Please set your location to receive local news, weather and TV/radio schedules"...

Netvibes needs some Human Content Aggregation

Hi,

In my previous posts on Netvibes and Content I was pointing to the fact that for "Non-nerds" Netvibes does not offer a lot of digested Data ready to use.
That's why I prepared my self the London (UK) and Paris (France) Tabs.

Pageflakes, one of Netvibes competitor, is going in my way. They have just published a FOOD page with feeds, blogs, recipes, pictures. It is a starting point for an "non-tech" English speaking audience and I am sure that Netvibes should go also that way but better.

I am surprised to see that there is no major INTERNET MUSIC page from Netvibes, knowing that Netvibes CEO, Tariq Krim and many of his team are coming from the Internet Music World.

When I speak about Human Content Aggregation is a way to signify that Automatic Aggreagtion is possible only with "experts" because they already know the subject and the sources.
But the average Internet User is not. Most of my friends and family have not already heard about RSS or Netvibes and there is the future.

Netvibes is waiting for the GINGER release to become social but, I insists, it is Content, Human Content, that will make the difference!

Position of Netvibes in the Starting Pages market

here is a comment I posted in the ReadWriteWeb post about the position of Netvibes in the market of Starting Pages:

"Netvibes is not the pioneer of startpages, but if you consider WEB 2.0 market for startpages, Netvibes is, at the moment, the leading competitor in terms of:
1) independence from MegaGroups,
2) collaborative creation of content,
3) overall quality,
4) international openess,
5) general compatibility (IE, FF..; PC-MAC, PC-mobile,)...

In my point of view what is missing is the attractiveness for the BIG AUDIENCE.

In my analysis, Netvibes and the other starting pages are used mainly used for Feed reading.

All the other possible practical uses are yet to be publicised (or discovered).

But CONTENT is always the key for success. It must not be Netvibes OWN content but a starting page has to give you the content you need (even if you do not know it already). "

Netvibes launches the PREMIUM UNIVERSES

Netibes is now launching the announced NETVIBES PREMIUM UNIVERSES.

As I published in a previous post end of August, Netvibes is now offering to Publisher to help them to create widgets with their own content and also to distribute them everywhere.
Basically is a Netvibes page in an iframe on the publisher website.

The offer considers:

-All the publisher feeds presented in one single widget. (Several thematic widgets can be created on demand).
- Premium Widgets can be branded just as a media property on its own.
- Built with UWA (Universal Widget API) : widgets can be installed in one click on Netvibes, Microsoft Vista, iGoogle, Apple Dashboard, iPhone, Live.com, etc.

Marshall Kirkpatrick on ReadWriteWeb is quite cautious on the success chances for this new service by Netvibes stating "I don't know how many companies will go for it".

For me, is just a piece of action in the CREATION OF CONTENT that will guarantee a long independent life to Netvibes.

More details on Netvibes TABS

Hi,

back to the desk , with some minor interesting change with Netvibes Tabs.

As you know, TABS are single pages with all their content: RSS feeds, calendars, webnotes, widgets ... You can find the 3.689 Tabs already available by looking in the Netvibes Ecosystem.

Untill now you could choose the Tabs just by its short description and the first 2-3 items but now if you click on the Tabs Page ( like the one for my LONDON UK ) you will be able to look at all the content. With the Mouse Over you can read all Link Locations.
That way you could souscribe just to a single item content of the chosen Tab!

That gives a better view of the Tab content... The way for Netvibes to the better Content is a long one but this one is another step.
